The Apologist - Zhang Yijing (1871--1931)
Zhang was born in a
far-off and poor farmer's family in Pingle County, Guangxi Province. It says
Zhang never cried as a baby until a person came in with a book. This is why
Zhang's nickname is called "Wenkai", meaning "speak at the sight of a book".
Zhang was a very talented person. When Zhang came to school at 6, he
memorized every word of the textbooks. Zhang had the reputation of whiz kid
at the age of 15, for his knowledge in Chinese literature of history. Zhang
got the New Testament from a friend at the age of 17 but he could not
understand it until a preacher's explained to him.He received Christ and
baptized at the age of 22.
After his baptism, Zhang went to Guangzhou to receive the theological
training of a well-known pastor, Mr. Ji Haobi. In 1905, Zhang had worked as
a school teacher and journalist. Zhang worked for "The True Light Magazine "
and used this magazine as a platform to defend the faith against anti-Christ
advocators such as Cai Yuenpui, Wang Jinwei and Chen Duxiu. Zhang, the
apologist, had earned his reputation of "The iron man in upholding the
truth; the defender of faith with his pen ". Zhang's apologetic efforts had
great significance in the history of countering the "Anti-Christianity
Movement" in China. Zhang ended his service in the world in 1931. He had
written many great books including "Bright Light shines through " and "Five
questions & answers on the essentials of the faith ".
